Guide · The account layer

SELF-EXCLUSION, EXPLAINED.

Self-exclusion is a formal request that licensed gambling operators close your access — per operator, or statewide through a regulator. It's worth doing and it has real legal weight. It also has a phone-sized gap: exclusion closes accounts, not devices, and it usually doesn't touch DFS pick'em or prediction markets at all.

The two kinds

Operator programs live inside each book's responsible gaming settings — cool-offs and timeouts measured in days, exclusions measured in months or years. They apply to that operator's account, usually in every state it serves.

State programs are run by gaming regulators and cover every operator licensed in that state at once. Terms typically run one year to lifetime. Enrollment is state-specific — some online, some requiring a form or an appointment.

Where to enroll (verified official programs)

Most states with legal online betting run an equivalent — search "[your state] gaming commission self-exclusion" or start from the National Council on Problem Gambling at ncpgambling.org, which maintains state-by-state resources. Enrollment through official regulator sites only; never through a book's marketing pages.

The honest gap

Exclusion is an account instrument. After you enroll, the apps are still on your phone and every site still resolves in Safari. Licensed operators must lock you out when you try to log in — but the reflex-loop (open app, see line, feel pull) survives, and the categories outside state jurisdiction remain fully open: DFS pick'em (PrizePicks, Underdog), federally regulated prediction markets (Kalshi), crypto markets (Polymarket), and offshore books.

The stack that actually covers the field: self-exclusion for the account layer, a device wall for the phone layer. Untilt blocks the excluded books and the categories exclusion can't reach, on the device where the urge lives.

Questions

Is self-exclusion reversible?

Generally not during its term — that's the point. Most programs make you wait out the full period, and some require a formal reinstatement process after it ends. Choose the term deliberately.

Does self-exclusion cover every betting app?

No. It covers licensed operators in the jurisdictions where you enrolled. DFS pick'em apps, prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket, and offshore books typically sit outside state programs.

Will self-exclusion hurt my credit or show up publicly?

Exclusion lists are confidential regulatory instruments, not credit events. Operators are required to keep you off marketing lists during the term.

Should I self-exclude or use a blocker?

Both, genuinely. Exclusion closes the account layer with legal weight; a device wall closes the phone layer instantly and covers the operators exclusion can't reach. They fail in different places, which is exactly why they stack well.
