Guide · The failure mode

SCREEN TIME ALONE ISN'T A WALL.

DIY Screen Time fails at blocking sportsbooks for three structural reasons: you know your own passcode, 'Ignore Limit' is one tap away, and the website list is yours to build and maintain forever. Untilt runs on the same Apple Screen Time technology — with those three holes sealed. Here's exactly how the two differ.

The three failure points

You hold the keys. The passcode that locks Screen Time is the passcode you set. At 11 PM after a bad beat, the person who typed it and the person deleting it are the same thumb. Any system whose override lives in your own head is a negotiation, and mid-tilt you lose negotiations with yourself.

"Ignore Limit" is a design feature. Screen Time was built for screen-life balance, not for adversarial moments. When a limit hits, iOS politely offers One More Minute / Remind Me in 15 / Ignore Limit For Today. Apple built the pressure valve in, because for Instagram that's the humane default. For a sportsbook it's a revolving door.

The site list is your homework. Limiting the DraftKings app does nothing to sportsbook.draftkings.com. Screen Time can block specific sites — but only ones you add by hand, one at a time, maintained forever while operators add domains and new books launch.

The core inversion: Untilt separates the decision from the moment. You seal a wall while clear-headed; while it runs there is nothing to argue with. Free walls last an hour — long enough for most urges to crest and pass. Pro walls run to the exact end you chose — Tonight, 7 Days, No End Date, or a Custom End — and leaving a long wall early is deliberately slow: a 24-hour wait, then a 15-second hold.

Where DIY Screen Time still belongs

Keep it for what it's good at — ambient limits, downtime, keeping the phone out of your bed. Use Untilt for the adversarial job: betting, where the person the limit protects and the person it restrains are the same thumb, minutes apart. Full method map: every way to block gambling apps on iPhone.

Questions

I set Screen Time limits and still bet. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing. The tool is misfit to the job: Screen Time assumes the person setting the limit and the person hitting Ignore Limit want the same thing. Against an urge, they don't. You need friction you can't disarm mid-urge — a sealed, timed wall.

Can someone else hold my Screen Time passcode?

Yes, and it genuinely helps — if you have a person you're ready to hand that to, and they never cave to a 'just this once' text. A sealed wall works without recruiting anyone, which also means nobody else has to know.

Isn't Untilt just Screen Time then?

It uses the same Apple enforcement — that's the strength. The difference is everything wrapped around it: a maintained 50-app + 50-site coverage list instead of a list you build, a sealed timer instead of your own passcode, no Ignore Limit, and a home readout that shows exactly when the wall comes down before you commit.

What happens when the wall ends?

It comes down on its own at the end time you chose — nothing to remember. Nothing is permanent by design: a wall is a decision made while clear, enforced while not.
