BLOCK GAMBLING APPS ON IPHONE.
There are five real ways to block sportsbooks and gambling apps on an iPhone: Screen Time, deleting the apps, Supervised Mode, DNS filtering, and operator/state self-exclusion. Each has a failure mode the marketing skips. This is the honest version of all five, and which to use when.
The honest comparison
| Method | Blocks apps | Blocks websites | Who holds the override | Setup cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screen Time | Limits | Manual list | You (your passcode) | 10 min |
| Delete + restrictions | Until reinstall | No | You (reinstall) | 5 min |
| Supervised Mode / MDM | Yes | Yes | Whoever holds supervision | Erase your iPhone |
| DNS wall (Untilt) | Yes, while up | Yes, while up | The timer — not you, mid-wall | Under a minute |
| Self-exclusion | No | No | The operator / state | Per operator or state |
1 · Screen Time — free, built-in, and you own the keys
Settings → Screen Time can limit apps and block specific websites. Set it up if you haven't — it's free and it helps on autopilot days. Its failure mode is structural, not a bug: the person setting the limit and the person hitting "Ignore Limit" are the same person, five hours apart in mood. Add the web problem — every book runs a full site, so app limits alone leave Safari wide open unless you hand-add and maintain every domain — and Screen Time ends up a speed bump, not a wall. Deeper teardown: Screen Time vs a DNS wall.
2 · Delete the apps — necessary, nowhere near sufficient
Deleting DraftKings feels decisive for about a day. The App Store remembers your purchases; reinstall is two minutes, and no download restriction blocks the mobile site. Deleting is a good ritual and a bad wall. If it worked, you wouldn't be reading this page.
3 · Supervised Mode — the strongest lock, at a price nobody mentions upfront
iPhone Supervised Mode (via Apple Configurator or an MDM service) can genuinely hard-block apps and domains — it's how company phones are locked down. The part often soft-pedaled by services selling this route: putting a personal iPhone into supervision requires erasing the phone and setting it up from scratch, and administering it well is a part-time IT job. If you have a trusted person to hold the supervision keys and you're willing to wipe your phone, it's a real option. Most people aren't, which is fine — that's what the next method is for.
4 · A DNS wall on the device — what Untilt does
Apple's Network Extension lets an app filter this iPhone's own traffic, on the device. Untilt uses it as a kill switch: hold once and covered sportsbook, DFS, and prediction-market domains stop resolving — apps and websites, Safari and Chrome, Wi-Fi and cellular. No erase, no account, no traffic routed through anyone's servers, and the receipts stay on your phone.
The design choice that separates it from Screen Time: walls are timed and sealed. While a wall is up there is no "Ignore Limit" — the free wall simply runs its hour. Pro walls run to an end time you chose while clear-headed, and long walls exit only through a deliberate written gate. The honest limit, stated plainly: iOS gives a phone's owner final system-level control, and other devices are outside this wall. Untilt's claim is friction that outlasts an urge, not magic. Full methodology here.
5 · Self-exclusion — do it, and know its edges
Operator self-exclusion (in each book's responsible gaming settings) and state programs close accounts. They're worth doing — they add legal and practical weight a device tool can't. They also leave every door on your phone open: apps still launch, sites still load, and DFS pick'em and prediction markets usually sit outside state programs entirely. Treat exclusion as the account layer and a device wall as the phone layer: how self-exclusion works, state by state.
Which to use
Tonight, before the games: a wall now — one hold, free hour, decide the rest tomorrow. This month: Untilt Pro with an end date, plus self-exclusion at the books you actually use. This year: keep both, add the money layer (separate the bankroll from the checking account), and if betting has stopped feeling optional, add a person — 1-800-GAMBLER is at the bottom of this page for a reason.
Per-book specifics: DraftKings · FanDuel · PrizePicks · Kalshi · all covered books.
Questions
What's the best free way to block betting apps on iPhone?
Untilt's 1-hour walls are free forever and block covered sportsbooks at the device level with nothing to toggle off mid-wall. Screen Time is also free but you hold its passcode. BetBlocker is a free charity option that covers multiple platforms.
Why doesn't Screen Time work for blocking sportsbooks?
Three reasons: you know your own passcode, 'Ignore Limit' is one tap away, and the web versions of every book still load unless you maintain a perfect manual website blacklist. It's friction you own the keys to.
Can I block gambling sites on iPhone without erasing my phone?
Yes. Supervised Mode requires erasing and re-setting up the iPhone, which is why most people abandon that route. On-device DNS filtering through Apple's Network Extension — what Untilt uses — installs like a normal app and requires no erase.
Does self-exclusion block the apps on my phone?
No. Self-exclusion closes accounts with licensed operators. The apps still open and the websites still load — and DFS pick'em and prediction markets are usually outside state programs entirely. Pair the account layer with a device layer.
PUT THE WALL UP.
Hold once. Covered sportsbooks, DFS apps, and prediction markets stop loading on this iPhone. 1-hour walls are free forever; Pro holds longer.
