SCREEN TIME ISN'T A WALL.
Screen Time fails at blocking sportsbooks for three structural reasons: you know your own passcode, 'Ignore Limit' is one tap away, and the web versions of every book stay reachable. A device-level DNS wall fixes all three — here's exactly how the two differ.
The three failure points
You hold the keys. The passcode that locks Screen Time is the passcode you set. At 11 PM after a bad beat, the person who typed it and the person deleting it are the same thumb. Any system whose override lives in your own head is a negotiation, and mid-tilt you lose negotiations with yourself.
"Ignore Limit" is a design feature. Screen Time was built for screen-life balance, not for adversarial moments. When a limit hits, iOS politely offers One More Minute / Remind Me in 15 / Ignore Limit For Today. Apple built the pressure valve in, because for Instagram that's the humane default. For a sportsbook it's a revolving door.
The web stays open. Blocking the DraftKings app does nothing to sportsbook.draftkings.com in Safari, Chrome, or the browser inside another app. Screen Time can block specific sites, but only ones you add by hand, one at a time, maintained forever while operators add domains.
What a sealed DNS wall does differently
| Screen Time | Untilt wall | |
|---|---|---|
| Override mid-urge | Ignore Limit / your passcode | None while the wall is up |
| Websites | Manual list you maintain | Covered by the same block, all browsers |
| Coverage updates | You, by hand | Shipped blocklist updates |
| Scope | Whatever you configured | Every covered book, DFS app, prediction market at once |
| Emotional design | Balance tool with exits | Kill switch with a timer |
The core inversion: Untilt separates the decision from the moment. You seal a wall while clear-headed; while it runs there is nothing to argue with. Free walls last an hour — long enough for most urges to crest and pass. Pro walls run to an exact end time, through the night or the weekend, with a deliberate written exit on long walls.
Where each still belongs
Keep Screen Time for what it's good at — ambient limits, downtime, keeping the phone out of your bed. Untilt Pro can even enlist Screen Time's one adversarially useful power: blocking app deletion while a wall is active. Use both layers; just don't ask the balance tool to be the wall. Questions
I set Screen Time limits and still bet. What am I doing wrong?
Nothing. The tool is misfit to the job: Screen Time assumes the person setting the limit and the person hitting Ignore Limit want the same thing. Against an urge, they don't. You need friction you can't disarm mid-urge — a sealed, timed wall.
Can someone else hold my Screen Time passcode?
Yes, and it genuinely helps — if you have a person you're ready to hand that to, and they never cave to a 'just this once' text. A device wall works without recruiting anyone, which also means nobody else has to know.
Does a DNS wall slow my internet down?
No. Untilt's filter checks lookups on the device itself; allowed traffic passes through normally. There's no proxy server in the path.
What happens when the wall ends?
Everything loads again, and STOPS shows a local receipt of what tried to load while it held. Nothing is permanent by design — a wall is a decision made while clear, enforced while not.
SEAL A WALL INSTEAD.
Hold once. Covered sportsbooks, DFS apps, and prediction markets stop loading on this iPhone. 1-hour walls are free forever; Pro holds longer.
